We, THE JUNGLEES are functioning as an advocacy - cum- activist NGO in wildlife conservation since 1986. THE JUNGLEES was founded on January 11, 1986. Based on the objective of protecting the country’s wildlife and tribal heritage through surveys and campaigns, we reach out to work at the grass root level. Our initiatives, backed by research, help us gain an independent view-point leading to suggestions for unbiased solutions and framing of conservation – related policies.
THE JUNGLEES seek to address your conscience and direct your attention to the large-scale usurpation of forests all over the country in the name of an industrial and agrarian revolution.
The very existence of our forests now seems to be under constant threat. The endangered species they harbour - The Golden Langurs of Manas, the Malabar Large Spotted Civet of Southern Western Ghats, the Travancore Tortoise of Kerala, The Asiatic Wild Water Buffalo of Bastar or the Black-Necked Cranes of Ladakh - all seem to echo with fervid terror of impending doom - “Shall we survive?”
A similar echo reverberates in the anxious conservation of the Korama tribesmen of Mysore, the Onges of Andamans, the Raltes of Manipur, and the Bison Horn Marias of Abujhmar Hills.
The ravage of forests for encroaching human habitat, cattle grazing, hydro-electric projects, procurement of wood for fuel and furniture, damming of rivers and above all, hunting & poaching of wildlife for illegal trade is an all-pervasive phenomenon spreading like cancer. The enlisted endangered species are all herded in the “Nursing homes” of Sanctuaries & National Parks for clinical attention. Along with dedicated naturalists, over-enthusiastic tourists flood these places constantly to have a rare view of wildlife. In spite of the onslaught of urban pressure, these endangered species of animals still reign supreme as examples of the most varied & exotic gift of nature, spread over 4 million square kilometres of India’s geographic canvas. How long they will survive, however, is a matter of time.
THE JUNGLEES refuse to be a passive witness in this devastation of our natural environmental opulence. We are a group of active environmentalists charged with a desire to conserve the majesty of untamed life. THE JUNGLEES´ task is to direct public attention towards conservation & maintenance of ecological harmony, getting involved in this movement that is on-going all over India. We seek to whet the enthusiasts’ desire to discover the distinctive aspects of the geographical, zoological and anthropological environment in a very Indian context through various conservation initiatives.
